About Sexplained Ltd and Knox Publishing Helen Knox, founder and Managing Director of Sexplained® Ltd., trained at the Westminster Hospital, London, before working St Thomas Hospital A&E Dept, London and later as a District Nursing Sister in west London. For over fifteen years, she has worked in the field of contraception and sexual health. She's the UKs first full-time Outreach Clinical Nurse Specialist in Contraception and Sexual Health working in deprived, multi-ethnic, inner city areas of south London from 1991 until the end of May, 2001. She was prompted by the lack of easily available, good quality information about contraception and sexual health. She searched hard for information to use in her teaching sessions, but couldn't find what she wanted in a way she wanted it, or to the depth she required. After many years at street level, teaching this subject to members of the general public, and after rejection by a publisher, Helen decided the information she had written was definitely needed. If no-one else would help her, she would publish it herself. She didn't know how, but she learnt fast! She enlisted the help of friends who had some insight in to desktop publishing and the gestation period for her first book began. Taking a loan from the bank, she started Knox Publishing as a sole trader in 1995 with the self-publication and promotion of SEXplained The Uncensored Guide to Sexual Health and in 1999 published its sequel, SEXplained 2 For Young People. The publication of which was supported by Schering Health Care Ltd and Condomania (UK) Ltd on 30th April, at The Z Bar & Brasserie in Brixton, south London, to an audience of health care professionals, press and the public. In September 1999, Sexplained Ltd was formed. Sexplained is the registered trade mark of Helen Knox / Knox Publishing. Since 1995: Financial support has been received from Condomania (UK) Ltd and SSL/Durex has supported PR through their regular publication Barrier Protection Digest. Schering Health Care Ltd supported publication, with bulk purchase in 1995, and their support continues. Penny Hopkinson, of Manual Writers International, edited SEXplained 2 For Young People and has given ongoing advice and guidance on press releases and all aspects of marketing. Numerous favourable book reviews have been received from professional and general publications since 1995. Sexplained® Books are available, to order, from any bookshop internationally and securely via our websites through a link to WorldPay. Many TV and radio interviews have been given to promote Sexplained® Books and raise Helens profile as the UKs first Outreach Clinical Nurse Specialist in Contraception and Sexual Health. Publicity has also been received from the UKs leading Black comedy duo, Robbie Gee and Eddie Nestor of GeeStor Productions Ltd and Helen has been involved with Eddie's radio show on a regular basis, taking questions live, on air. In 2000, Sexplained Ltd introduced Sexplained Training for Trainers & Influencers to widen education related to contraception and sexual health related material as far as possible. In February 2001, Sexplained Foundation was formed, a non-profit organisation to help and support people less advantaged, in need of solid inforamtion and materials related to contraception and sexual health in the UK and overseas. Helen left her Outreach post in south London in May 2001, to concentrate on developing Sexplained Ltd and now, Sexplained Foundation. The Sexplained Column started in June 2001. This is a monthly advice column which appears in Better Health Magazine, Barbados, published by The NATION Publishing Co Ltd (now part of One Caribbean Media) Helen became online Sexpert for the BBC.co.uk website in December 2001 and was filmed by BBC Choice for a new documentary series for TV broadcast in Feb 2002 - titled, Sex, Warts and All |
