Introduction to ICR - 2003/4

International Care & Relief (ICR) is a small charity working with children and young people overseas, in particular in East Africa.

Founded in 1978, ICR gives young people the knowledge, skills and resources that enable them to bring about long-term change in their lives.

This is achieved through a range of innovative and dynamic projects which help teenagers and young adults break their own poverty cycle, tackle inequality and create secure futures for themselves.

ICR increases the opportunities that young people have when they finish primary school, such as gaining employment and earning a sustainable income. We assist young people to create the opportunities which will improve their lives.

ICR believes young people are not just beneficiaries of ICR's support; they play an active role in guiding and informing ICR's programmes.

Examples of our programmes designed to enable disadvantaged young people to escape a future of poverty include:

· Educational projects; ICR enables children to receive a decent education through building classrooms, providing text books and sanitation facilities.

· Vocational Training Skills; ICR encourages young people to attend education centres which provide training courses and equipment to enable young people to gain employment and earn money to support themselves.

· HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention; ICR educates young people on the threat of HIV/AIDS and how they can protect themselves.

· Agriculture; ICR trains young people in farming methods to enable them to increase food generation and earn a sustainable income from their land.

. Water; ICR has provided access to clean, safe drinking water for thousands of people.

· ICR also actively works with projects which benefit the whole community such as famine prevention, environmental protection and income generation.

Until The Violence Stops (UTVS) is a creative campaigning and educational organisation working to end violence and abuse against women through prevention. UTVS aims to raise consciousness and challenge abusive behaviour using creativity, the arts, media, political and cultural awareness and mass communication strategies.

UTVS carries our various projects and programmes and campaigns very closely with charities that work with survivors of violence and abuse. One of the main projects that UTVS coordinates is the V-Day movement.
